Barry Zwarenstein has been the CFO of six public technology companies and has managed successful IPOs at Five9, VeriFone and Logitech. Barry has served as Five9’s CFO since January 2012 and Interim CEO from December 2017 until May 2018. Five9 is a leader in cloud contact center software, empowering Enterprises to deliver extraordinary customer experiences.
Barry’s professional philosophy as CFO is grounded on 3 pillars:
First, Barry views the CFO as a business advocate rather than a corporate policeman. He achieves this by taking a broad view of the role, by gaining a strategic understanding of the business and by being a trusted advisor to the CEO, the management team and the business units, all while maintaining financial and control discipline.
Second, to lead, mentor and coach an ethical, culturally aware, financial team which has a strong business partnering mind-set and is driven by desire for innovation and continuous improvement. The Five9 Finance function is deeply respected within the company for its service orientation, for the accuracy and timeliness of operational and financial metrics and for the quality of its analyses.
And third, to meet the needs of the investor community who have a vital interest in understanding Five9’s strategy and prospects. By executing its growth and margin expansion strategy and by providing clear and transparent communications, Five9 has cultivated institutional ownership by premiere mutual funds and other leading investors and seen its stock price increase by more than 600% since its IPO five years ago.
Barry has considerable M&A experience, having played a lead role in numerous transactions, including the sale of SMART Modular Technologies to Silver Lake Partners and the sale of Acuson to Siemens. In addition, Barry was a board member and audit committee chair of DealerTrack from 2007 through 2015, when the company was sold to Cox Automotive.
Barry started his career at FMC Corporation, serving in various domestic and international positions, including in Ankara, Barcelona and Brussels.
Barry lives in the Bay Area with his wife, Mahbobeh, who has enabled his professional success through her unwavering support and counsel. In his free time, he enjoys travel, reading and is a wine lover.
Barry holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and an M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is qualified as a Chartered Accountant (South Africa).
