Aneal Vallurupalli – Airbase

Aneal Vallurupalli

Emerging Company

Aneal isn’t the typical C.F.O. He has completely redefined the traditional role as we know it at Airbase. He’s the C.F.O. of a company that sells to C.F.O.s. Airbase combines enterprise-grade power with a delightful user experience to revolutionize procure-to-pay solutions. His job is to fulfill the role of a C.F.O. while also representing the company’s buyer—attracting and nurturing prospects and clients daily and playing a core role in product development. As such, in addition to traditional C.F.O. duties, he also plays a major role in Airbase’s brand, go-to-market, and sales initiatives, serving as the key spokesperson for the company’s target audience. Aneal oversees Airbase’s post-sales revenue efforts, including leading the business’s subscription and financial services revenue. It’s not often C.F.O.s play such an external role when it comes to industry thought leadership, either. Representing the industry’s gold standard of thought leadership, Aneal runs and hosts a popular fintech podcast, “What I Wish I Knew,” and acts as a key spokesperson on Airbase’s behalf across dozens of speaking engagements, conferences, and events. At just 37 years old, he’s a powerhouse — one of the youngest C.F.O.s today. Known for leading with compassion and curiosity, he has overseen everything from H.R. to Legal teams. At Airbase, Aneal oversees the following teams: Finance, Accounting, Business Operations, Analytics, Risk and A.M.L. Compliance, Payment Operations, and Post-Sales (Onboarding, Customer Success, Renewal Account Management).

Aneal has extensive experience in corporate Finance, corporate development, operations, and tech M&A. Before joining Airbase, Aneal was Vice President of Finance & Operations at Mattermost, where he still serves as an advisor. At Mattermost, he led the $50M Series B and grew the company’s enterprise value with a 4x increase in revenue growth while leading the G&A function (Finance, Business Operations, I.T., Legal, and People). Before Mattermost, Aneal was the Head of Strategic Finance at Mapbox, leading the $164M Series C round of funding from SoftBank. He was also a founding member of the Corporate Development team at Guidewire (NYSE: GWRE), helping it grow from a $900M private company to a $7B public company. Aneal began his career in technology investment banking at Union Square Advisors, where he completed several buy-side and sell-side technology M&A engagements. He is a member of the Forbes Council, Operators Guild, and C.F.O. Circle.

While at Airbase, Aneal has overseen significant growth and transformation. He built his team from scratch, established the majority of the functions that currently report to him, and led the raise of Airbase’s largest line of credit for the company’s financial services business (a $150M deal). Aneal has also helped lead the organization to greater than 4x revenue growth in one year and has been instrumental in recruiting top, diverse talent—across his teams; he has 50% female representation—well above the industry average. Aneal believes that diverse teams win and has seen this directly impact success. Additionally, he guided Airbase through a successful remote-first working plan, leveraging his extensive pre-pandemic experience in running remote-first organizations and achieving best-in-class employee retention rates globally—across 15 countries.
